Some claim that by mastering the art of meditation, that real levitation becomes possible.

Reports of levitation have manifested throughout the centuries. Instances of levitation have been reported worldwide, especially in Tibet.

In fact, in the thirteenth century, yogi Milarepa was said to sleep and even walk while levitating. Today, some practitioners of Transcendental Meditation declare that they have perfected meditation to the extreme; many claim that they can teach yogic flying to virtually anyone.

Yoga and Meditation

Combining meditation with certain poses, known as asanas, is the basis of yoga. Although many recorded cases of levitation throughout history have been spontaneous, there are those that are said to have been achieved through meditation. Transcendental meditation has become renowned around the world for its claims of levitation through yogic flying.

What is Yogic Flying?

In Victor N. Davich's book The Best Guide to Meditation, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is quoted as saying, "Yogic Flying brings waves of bubbling bliss creating happiness in the individual and peace in the world." What this looks like while watching practitioners is seeing people sitting in a lotus position hopping across the room.

According to author Rosemary Ellen Guiley who penned Harper's Encyclopedia of Mystical & Paranormal Experience, yogic flying "is said to be accomplished by maximizing coherence, (orderliness,) in brain-wave activity, which enables the brain to tap into the 'unified field' of cosmic energy."

What's the Secret to Levitation?

When to comes to any kind of phenomena which may be considered paranormal in one form or another, skeptics are always involved. As yogic flying only takes place for seconds at a time, skeptics don't believe that actual levitation takes place. Instead, they believe that the so-called levitation is actually achieved through muscular action.

Can transcendental meditation achieve levitation? There are many who have studied this form of meditation and some claim it is true. In fact, transcendental meditation practitioners claim to have taught this technique to over 100,000 people who have reportedly been successful in mastering levitation.

Claims of levitation have endured for centuries. While some acts of levitation have been completely unintentional, others believe the phenomena can be learned by mastering deep meditation techniques, particularly with transcendental meditation.

Is yogic flying a form of meditation that allows for the body to rise above the ground, or is it merely a way to master a form of muscle control that allows a person to hop while in a lotus position? This comes down to what one wants to believe.
