The lost continent of Atlantis has long been debated as to if it really existed or not. If it did, what is the location of Atlantis?

For centuries, the existence of a lost continent has been argued. Curiosity about the fabled Atlantis reached new heights in 1882 when Ignatius Donnelly, a US congressmen, published Atlantis: The Antediluvian World.

Citing the similarities in culture between Egypt, Central and South America, he determined that there must have been a common source. That common source was believed to be Atlantis.

Location of Atlantis

More than forty-five locations around the world have been identified as possible sites for the advanced civilization that was mentioned by Plato. According to Plato's writings, Atlantis was located near the Pillars of Hercules, which is now thought of to be the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Greek island of Santorini is believed by some to be the remains of the continent. While some hypotheses place Atlantis in the Mediterranean Sea, most researchers believe it is located somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Lost Continent of Atlantis

Psychic Edgar Casey predicted that Atlantis would be found at Bimini, an island located in the Bahamas. Interestingly enough, in 1968, some undersea ruins were discovered off the coast of North Bimini. Another theory is that Atlantis is located beneath the Bermuda Triangle.

Proponents of this theory believe that powerful energy from the island still exists and is responsible for the various strange occurrences that happen within the Triangle. If Atlantis should be found there, it would certainly solve the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle.

It has been suggested that a pyramid found in 1977 off Cay Sal in the Bahamas may be part of the lost civilization. The areas of Peru and Bolivia have been thought to contain clues as to where this ancient civilization existed.

Where is Atlantis?

Completely away from the most popular theorized locations for Atlantis is Antarctica. The hypothesis is that at one time, Antarctica was a lush, fertile region. Due to a polar shift, the area became covered in ice and the remains of Atlantis were buried beneath.

As people continue to search for this famed lost continent, it is likely that portions of more lost civilizations will be found. Will any of them turn out to be Atlantis? That's something only time and research will tell. Until that time, one has to keep in mind that at this time, the existence of Atlantis has not been proven.

Nicely balanced article, tho it should be noted that Plato never called Atlantis a continent, only an island. Its location was just where Plato said -- beyond Gibralter and facing the region of Gades (Cadiz). Unfortunately, it was the site of a supervolcano which exploded in the 17th century BC, sinking the island and leaving nothing but a gigantic caldera on the ocean floor (See Roots of Cataclysm, Algora Publ. NY 2009).
