Despite counterfeit tickets, a gas leak, and running out of food and water on its opening day, Disneyland went on to become one of the most popular theme parks in the world. With the success of Disneyland, a second park called Disney World was opened in Florida in 1971. Disney's magic made it to Japan when Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983. In 1991, Euro Disney opened, which is now known as Disneyland Paris. Although it got off to a rocky start, Disneyland Paris gained popularity and in 2005 Hong Kong Disney became Disney's newest theme park.
Disneyland and California Adventure Theme Parks
Over the years, many changes have taken place in Disneyland with new rides and attractions continuously taking place through the years. Currently the lands in Disneyland consist of Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland, Adventureland, and Mickey's Toontown, with additional areas being Critter Country, New Orleans Square, and Main Street U.S.A.
Disney's second California theme park, California Adventure, opened in 2001. California Adventure is based on different California venues and areas include Paradise Pier, the Hollywood Picture Backlot, and the Golden State. Originally California Adventure didn't draw the crowds Disney had hoped for due to the fact that the majority of rides and attractions were geared for kids over 48". Since then, Disney has been adding and is continuing to add more rides and attractions for younger guests.
Disney World in Florida
Disney World in Florida consists of four theme parks, along with two water parks. The Magic Kingdom is similar to California's Disneyland with the lands of Adventureland, Frontierland, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Mickey's Toontown Fair, and the additional areas of Liberty Square and Main Street U.S.A.
Epcot, (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow,) consists of Future World, where the rides and attractions are based on advances in technology, and the World Showcase, where guests can get a feel of different countries around the world through entertainment, rides, restaurants, and shops.
The Animal Kingdom is broken down into seven areas. This 500 acre park allows for guests to go on a safari, travel back to the time of dinosaurs, and get a feel of African culture. Disney's Hollywood Studios, (formerly the M.G.M. Studios,) gives guests a taste of Hollywood through shows, attractions, and rides. Additionally, Disney World has Disney's Typhoon Lagoon and Disney's Blizzard Beach for water park fun.
Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea
Tokyo Disneyland features many of the same lands, rides, and attractions as its American counterparts. Themed areas include Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Toontown, and Westernland, (similar to Frontierland,) along with Critter Country and World Bazaar.
In 2001, a second park was opened called Tokyo DisneySea. This nautical based theme park has seven themed ports that include Port Discovery, Lost River Delta, Mermaid Lagoon, Arabian Coast, American Waterfront, Mediterranean Harbor, and Mysterious Island.
Disneyland Paris Formerly Known as Euro Disney
In an effort to increase tourism, the original name of Euro Disney was changed to Disneyland Paris. The themed areas at Disneyland Paris are Fantasyland, Adventureland, Frontierland, Discoveryland, (similar to Tomorrowland,) and Main Street U.S.A.
In 2002, Disney opened a second theme park. The Walt Disney Studios Park, like California Adventure, did not live up to the expectations as far as attendance goes. However, the park has since seen growth after adding more rides and attractions. Themed areas include Toon Studio, Backlot, Front Lot, and Production Courtyard.
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort
Disney's newest theme park is home to four American classic themed lands. There's Fantasyland which includes Disneyland favorites like Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Mad Hatter Tea Cups, and Small World. Space Mountain and Autotopia can be found in Tomorrowland. Adventureland has the Jungle River Cruise, similar to the Jungle Cruise, and Mainstreet U.S.A. offers guests the Hong Kong Disney Railroad and Main Street Vehicles.
From its humble beginnings as a single amusement park in Anaheim, California, Disney has expanded to five theme parks in the United States, Japan, France, and Hong Kong. With the success of its current parks, most likely Disney theme parks will continue to grow and bring even more family entertainment.
