Man has always been fascinated with fire. Even in ancient times, people would stare into the flames as they brought on an almost a hypnotic type of state. Staring into a candle can help bring focus to a meditation and create an environment which leads to a deeper meditation.
A candle can be used alone as a meditation tool or combined with other tools such as incense or a meditation CD. It all comes down to personal preference and what works best for an individual.
Candle Colors And Meditation
Some practitioners enjoy meditating with a particular color of candle as it's believed that different colors evoke different reactions. For example, red is a very powerful color and is associated with passion and energy.
Yellow is said to give an individual clarity and opens the door to psychic awareness. The color green is connected with healing. It is also used for growth and physical and mental renewal. Blue represents peace and tranquility. The use of this color candle is especially good if the individual is feeling stressed.
Indigo is associated with spirituality. This dark shade signifies mystery and can be used to expand the mind. White is for wholeness, inner peace and purity, while providing protection. Use of a gold candle is for aspiration and for expressing one's spiritual nature.
Meditating With a Candle
When meditating with a candle, place the candle so it will be at eye level. This will help ensure that the back will remain straight during the meditation. If using the candle to only focus on the flame, (versus using it for the color,) stare into the flame and begin to take slow, deep breaths.
Keep focusing on the flame. Anytime the mind wanders, bring your focus back to the flame. Concentrate for about 5-10 minutes on the flame, then blow it out. Please know that no special kind of candle is needed for this type of meditation.
Candle Color Meditation
Begin this meditation the same way as the above exercise except with this meditation, the focus is on the color of the candle. Don't just see the color with your eyes, but see the color in your mind. Imagine this color running all through the body.
Visualize the color as clearly as possible while focusing on the qualities you hope to achieve. Keep focusing on the color throughout the meditation. When finished, take a few additional deep breathes before ending the meditation.
Using a candle during meditation can help keep a person relaxed while helping to keep the meditation focused.
