Get decorative and creative with some crafts that celebrate St. Paddy's Day. Crafts are fun to do as a family project or can be great in the classroom. Many of the crafts in this article can continue to be used after the holiday as decorative pieces.
Saint Patrick Craft
Create an Irish luck box. Start with a small wooden box. Paint the outside of it green. A medium shade of green works well. Once the paint has dried, it's time to decorate the box. Many different options are available. Designs can be painted onto the box or for younger children, give them a variety of stickers, including shamrocks.
Other decorating ideas include gluing on plastic gold coins, rhinestones, pieces of yarn, pictures of leprechauns, and glitter. Once the outside is dry, cut out a piece of green felt for the inside bottom of the box. Add one gold coin for luck and you now have an Irish luck box.
St. Patrick's Decorations
Make a decorative door hanger. Start with a piece of forest green fun foam. Cut it to be 12 inches in length and 6 inches in width. Towards the top, cut out a hole so it can be hung on the door knob. Glue on fun foam shapes like a leprechaun's hat, glitter, sequins, or anything that is festive and relates to St. Patrick's Day.
Design a St. Paddy's plant. Start with a plain planter. Paint it green, as this is the traditional color for the holiday, or use gold paint as leprechauns are known to have pots of gold. When the paint is dried, decorate the planter. Next, plant a clover plant. This can be done by using seeds or by an actual small clover plant.
Shamrock Craft
Shamrocks are very closely associated with St. Patrick's Day. Using green construction paper, cut out a shamrock. Glue a picture of the child's face in the middle. Let each child decorate the shamrock with crayons, stickers, small circular shapes of yellow construction paper, (which represent gold coins), glitter, or sequins. Attach a small magnet the back so it can be placed on the refrigerator.
Another shamrock craft is to create a garland. Once again, with the use of green construction paper, cut out several shamrocks. Have children decorate each one, then use a hole punch to punch a hole at the top of each of the shamrocks. Take either green or gold yarn and run it through each of them to pull them together into a garland. An alternative to shamrocks is to use green construction paper and cut out leprechaun hats.
Crafts are a fun way to celebrate any holiday. What's even better is when a craft can be used for a decoration once the holiday has passed. Take care when it comes to younger children and small decorating pieces as they can pose a choking hazard.
