Learn about haunted Salem and the Salem witch trials of 1692. What happened to the so-called witches of Salem? What is Salem witchcraft like today?

In 1692, the Salem Massachusetts witch trials took place. It was a time of fear and suspicion. Within this time of hysteria, nineteen people lost their lives after they were accused and found guilty of witchcraft. Each took their last breath at the local gallows. A reminder of this time in history is the Witch House.

Salem Witch House

What is now known as the Witch House was once home to Jonathan Corwin, a local judge involved the Salem witch trials. This historic home is now open for tours. Besides being a historical monument, this house, which is associated with the witches of Salem, is also known for being haunted.

Haunted Salem

Although Salem has had different ghost investigations, when it comes to the Witch House, no paranormal investigations have been allowed. That is, until recently. On 2/18/2011, the Travel Channel aired an episode of Ghost Adventures, in which Zak Bagans, Nick Groff and Aaron Goodwin became the first group of ghost hunters ever allowed to investigate the property.

The team brought in a local warlock and witch to perform a pagan ceremony at the start of their investigation. Before the ceremony was even completed, ghostly activity began to happen. During their time investigating, EVP, (electronic voice phenomena,) sessions were conducted. Don't know what this is? If not, further information can be found in the article What is Electronic Voice Phenomena?

A question posed was, "How did you die?" Captured on an EVP was the response, "Hanged." When asked what the name of the spirit was who was communicating with them, the name Bridget Bishop came through on the recording. As it turns out, Bishop was the first person to be hanged as a result of the Salem witch hunt.

1692 Salem

The Salem of yesteryear and the Salem of today are two totally different times. Whereas fear ruled the city in 1692, today self-proclaimed witches roam freely on the streets. In fact, there are numerous stores that sell witchcraft items including magick spell sets and just about anything else that the modern-day witch needs.

The Salem witch trials were definitely a dark time in Salem, Massachusetts history. Spirits are still alive today as reminders of the past. The image of witches being evil and the work of Satan have now been replaced with acceptance and a reminder of bad judgment in the past. The Witch House in Salem now honors the nineteen victims who lost their lives during a time of fear and panic.
