The date December 21, 2012 marks the end of the Mayan calendar. Some believe this spells doomsday for Earth, while other believe it signifies the dawn of a new age for mankind. It is alleged by Mayan prophecy that the Earth ends one cycle and begins a new one every 5,125 years. The last cycle ended in 1987, with a new cycle set to begin in 2012.
Early Doomsday Predictions
As early as 2800 BC, the end of the world has been predicted. This early prediction on an Assyrian tablet claimed that the world was quickly coming to an end. It was predicted by Hilary of Pointers, (a bishop,) that the world would end in 365 AD. The year 1284 was the year the world would end according to Pope Innocent III.
Throughout mankind's history, the end of the world as we know it has predicted time and time again with earlier predictions of the Apocalypse occurring again in 1367 when the Antichrist would cause the end of the world and in 1524 when the world was going to be destroyed by a global flood, according to some astrologers.
Modern Day End of World Predictions
Many religious and cult leaders have predicted the end of the world in more modern times. Emanuel Swedenborg, (of the Swedenborgian Church) predicted that Doomsday would occur in 1757.
The year 1936 would spell mankind's demise according to Worldwide Church of God founder, Herbert W. Armstrong, while spiritual leader Michael Travesser, of The Lord Our Righteousness Church, claimed the world would be destroyed on October 31, 1997.
