A fun shoe craft is to make your own flip flops. Start with a plain pair in a solid color, then transform them into a creative fashion masterpiece. This can be done with craft kits or individually with a variety of craft supplies.
Flip Flop Crafts
If only decorating a small number of beach sandals, consider getting a craft kit. Several companies make them including Noodle Head. Noodle Head makes two different kits. One is geared for younger kids, while the other one is geared for teens. Everything that's needed comes in the kit, including the flip flops.
Should you prefer something simple, Alex Toys has a kit called Flip 'Em Flops Kit which contains a pair of soles and seven pairs of ribbons that can be swapped out to coincide with each day of the week. Of course, if using a kit, you're limited as to what you can do. In addition, depending on the number of people making this craft, it would be much more expensive for each individual to use a kit. Instead, it might be better to buy plain flip flops and items to decorate them with.
Personalized Flip Flops
There are lots of great ways to put a personal touch on flip flops. As these kinds of sandals are often used at the beach, pool side or during water play, it's best to keep everything waterproof. Use waterproof paint to create a variety of pictures on the soul. Ideas include:
- creatively writing your name
- flowers
- stars
- stripes
- swirls
- polka dots
- footballs
What's painted on the sole depends on who the flip flops are being made for. What's used as a preschool class project would be much different than what is used for a girl's teen party. If wanting to be more precise in the design, stencils can be used.
Decorating Flip Flops
Using waterproof glue, lots of creative items can be used for decorations. These includes sequins, jewels, flat gemstones, including rhinestones, which can be used on the straps. Waterproof glitter glue can also be added, along with flip flop charms. If preferring to keep it simple, merely paint the straps as well.
Care should be taken that there is ample time for both paint and glue to dry before attempting to wear them for the first time. This fun shoe craft is great for school projects for young children, summer crafts and parties. In fact, some people build an entire party around decorating flip flops.
Just be sure to start with plain flip flops, use waterproof materials and let everyone's imaginations create the perfect personalized beach sandals. Otherwise, if dealing with a limited number of people, a flip flop craft kit may be a good way to go.
